March area news
improve for the forthcoming season of events. As Sue is so
good at listing them all, I won’t repeat anything here other
than to say that the highlights for me this month will be the
club AGM/Area Organisers’ meeting at Head Office on 14th
April which Sue and I will be attending, and Drive It Day on
28th April, which this year finishes at Dingles Heritage
Fairground Centre in Lifton. More details will be sent out nearer
the time.
The March meeting took place on another wet evening. Once
again, Darren was the only person brave enough to bring a
Triumph. His poor Herald is driven in all weathers. I believe
his Spitfire (when finished) will probably be restricted to fairweather
use, at least to start with.
Lee Williams made us aware of a very worthwhile event
which will be raising money for Cancer Research UK. It starts
on 30th April and is a relay, taking in much of the UK coastline.
Participants can join one stage, all of them or anything
in between. Further details can be found on the Evoke Tours
website (www.evoketours.com).
Mick joined us from Shebbear . He’ll shortly be having his
long-awaited knee surgery so is frantically finishing the roof
on his garage before he temporarily loses his mobility.
We welcomed new visitor and club member Nick Bailey. Nick
is an enthusiastic Vitesse owner who has recently moved to
Lynton with his partner, having had enough of living in Surrey
and commuting into London. They have bought a B & B and
are enjoying their new lifestyle. Nick’s Vitesse (a 2 litre convertible)
was driven down to Devon on the second attempt
(the first attempt was aborted almost as soon as it had begun,
due to an overheating problem which was rectified within a
few days).
Nick is part of the committee in charge of organising the Lyn
Valley Classic which will be taking place on 9th June. There
will be a great array of classics in attendance. If you want
your Triumph to be in pride of place next to the cliff railway,
get your entry forms to Nigel by Drive It Day please.
When Malcolm and Mandy arrived, many of us were already
sat down. As they came into the room, they sat at opposite
ends of a long table with the rest of us sat on either side. It
was a bit like watching the Lord and Lady take their seats at
a lavish banquet.
The excitement was palpable as conversations
stopped mid-sentence and everyone
watched open-mouthed as Lord
Malcolm stood up to address us with his
monthly “Show and Tell†feature. Can you
guess what it is (see picture)? I managed
to work it out quite quickly this time.
It’s a carburettor balancing device. When
the bottles are part-filled with water, the
pipe that links them ensures that the levels
are equal. On Malcolm’s Spitfire there
are two vacuum connectors on the inlet
manifold, so the level of suction can be used to gauge
whether the carburettors are balanced by looking at the difference
in the level of water in each of the bottles.
Alan and Janet, Geoff and Dawn were looking forward to
their forthcoming holidays. Mike and Irene joined us once
again. It’s always great to see them.
Simon came along with news that the purple Stag is back at
home. He’ll be working on its reassembly over the coming
weeks.
